We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer to maintain, optimize, and extend our existing data pipeline infrastructure built on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). In this role, you will ensure the smooth operation and scalability of data workflows that are critical to our business intelligence, analytics, and product functions.
This role demands a thoughtful engineer who not only understands distributed data systems but also values data integrity, compliance, and efficient operations. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including analytics, security, and product development to ensure high-quality data delivery and governance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Several years of professional experience as a Data Engineer (or similar) working with distributed data systems
- Hands on expertise with Google Cloud Platform services (BigQuery, Cloud Spanner, Cloud Storage, Cloud Composer/Airflow, IAM)
- Proficient in Python (tests, packaging) and advanced SQL optimization
- Solid understanding of GDPR/CCPA, PII handling and data security best practices
- Demonstrated reliability, native problem solving ability and integrity
- Comfortable working independently and asynchronously with a manager based on the US East Coast (no regular evening hours required)
- Excellent English communication skills, German is a plus
Preferred Qualifications
- CI/CD for data pipelines (GitLab CI, Cloud Build, Terraform, Docker)
- Experience with dbt or similar transformation frameworks
- Familiarity with modern data catalog / lineage tools (DataHub, Collibra, BigQuery Data Catalog)
- Streaming ingestion (Pub/Sub, Dataflow, Kafka) or real time feature store design
- Exposure to Tableau, MongoDB, PostgreSQL and cost optimized query design
What you can expect
- Maintain, refactor and automate critical production ETL/ELT workflows in Cloud Composer & Python
- Model and optimize data in BigQuery/Cloud Spanner for analytics and AI ready feature stores
- Embed privacy by design: implement IAM least privilege, encryption, audit logging and data quality checks to close GDPR gaps
- Monitor & support: build observability dashboards, join a follow the sun on call rotation and lead blameless post mortems
- Collaborate async: document Architecture Decision Records and runbooks in Confluence, track work in Jira, and sparring peers
